The challenge

Patent offices worldwide — USPTO, EPO, and WIPO — enforce strict formatting rules for patent drawings: precise paper margins, line weights, scaling conventions, and view requirements, all rendered in black-and-white without shading or color. Converting CAD files into compliant patent drawings was a notoriously manual process. Law firms hired specialized illustrators to manually recreate technical drawings, a process that took over 40 hours for complex inventions. Even minor design updates meant starting from scratch. Quality varied from one draftsman to another, and formatting errors triggered costly revision cycles that delayed the entire patent filing process. After years of dealing with these inefficiencies, the client — an innovative patent law firm — reached a breaking point and began searching for an AI development partner.

Our solution

We designed and built a web-accessible platform powered by a U-Net deep learning architecture that automates the entire CAD-to-patent-drawing conversion process. Users simply drag and drop CAD files into a clean React-based interface, and the system automatically renders compliant patent drawings — handling margin rules, line weights, scaling, view separation, and black-and-white conversion for USPTO, EPO, and WIPO standards. The neural network was trained on thousands of approved patent drawings to ensure output quality matches professional illustrators. The platform runs on scalable Google Cloud infrastructure, handling even the most complex multi-view CAD models without performance degradation. Stripe integration enables the client to offer the tool as a SaaS product to other law firms.
